Eating in NYC
Any New Yorkers out there? Where do you like to eat in Manhattan or within a short distance from Manhattan? I.e. subway, cab ride away. Anyone been to Otto, for instance? Indian? Asian?

For Indian, you might try the Curry Hill neighborhood — Lower East Side, high 20s on and around Lexington Avenue. It’s two and a half blocks’ walk from the 28th Street subway station on the 6 line. From what folks have told me, Dosa Hut, Saravanaas, and Vatan are all excellent, and though a carnivore I totally loved Pongal (kosher vegetarian!).

Try Penang: http://www.penangusa.com/location_upperwest.html
Malaysian food. Great flavors - taste is close to Thai, but different.

Also, Ono - its location escapes me right now, but I can find out. Great foie gras, sushi, and dessert - here’s a couple food pictures:

Also, Vince’s for really great BBQ (& good draught beers) and Heartland Brewery for some NYC microbrews.

For top notch–and ridiculously inexpensive for NYC– coffee and pastries, you can’t beat Fluffy’s (on 7th Ave. between 54th and 55th). I suggest the croissant, which is only two dollars! And I think a large coffee’s less than that, if memory serves. They’ll deliver right to your hotel room too–not sure what their delivery range is, but a couple yrs ago at MLA when I was on a search committee, we ordered in from there three consecuritve mornings. My brother, a food snob (and big-time coffee snob), swears by them.
